We can do it.

History is being made as I write this, folks. Today, people all across the country are standing in lines that are sometimes stretching around the block in order to vote for our next president. Supposedly, there hasn't been this kind of anticipation of a presidential election in the United States since 1968. In that election, the Democratic candidate, Robert Kennedy, was assassinated. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. And there was a strong showing by a third-party candidate which is rare in this country, Independent George Wallace. Ultimately, Richard Nixon was the winner. We all know how that turned out...

I'm hopeful that this election will have a much happier ending. You can feel the excitement just by walking around today. People can't stop talking about what's going to happen, and asking each other if they've voted yet. There are signs up everywhere. "Don't forget to vote today!" they say. A new sense of patriotism has come over us, and this time, as opposed to in 2001, it's for a good reason. I actually got choked up walking to my polling place this morning, thinking about how proud I am to be able to vote for not only the first African American president in our country's history, but for someone who I truly believe stands for real change. The world's collective eyes are on us.

Keep your fingers crossed.
